Subway Island, located near the Bronx coastline and part of the metropolitan waterway system, lies within the historic territory of the Lenape people, particularly the Siwanoy band. Prior to European colonization, the island area and surrounding waters were part of Indigenous seasonal resource zones, including fishing, shellfishing, and bird hunting, intimately tied to the estuarine ecosystem of the Bronx River and Long Island Sound.
