Mau Mau Island, also known as White Island, is a small, uninhabited island located between Gerritsen Creek and Mill Creek in Brooklyn's Marine Park area. Historically, the surrounding region was a tidal salt marsh ecosystem, important to the Lenape who inhabited much of Brooklyn and Long Island Sound. Although the island itself emerged only in the 20th century through landfill, the estuarine environment played a vital role for Indigenous peoples in fishing, shellfishing, and seasonal resource gathering, continuing the broader cultural landscape around Marine Park.
