Decline and Destruction of the Original Pier

The piers along Manhattan’s west side, including Pier 54, gradually fell into disuse by the late 20th century. Hurricane Sandy in 2012 further devastated the structures lining the Hudson River, including Pier 54, rendering them unserviceable and sparking a push for revitalized waterfront public spaces.

Ecological Importance and Aquatic Habitat

Beneath its visible landscape, Little Island’s precast columns create a unique habitat for marine life, serving as breeding grounds for fish and other aquatic species. The park’s design integrates biofiltration swales and organic soil management to maintain water quality and support urban biodiversity.

Future Maintenance, Programming, and Resilience

The park employs organic maintenance to minimize chemical impacts and adapts to climate change through construction resilience and plant selection. Planned programming includes expanded arts, community engagement, and educational initiatives focused on ecology and history.

Historical Continuity and Commemoration

The site preserves and honors multiple histories—from Indigenous legacies through maritime and immigrant narratives to LGBTQ+ community use of the former piers in the 1970s and 80s. Little Island maintains ties to these layered histories while serving contemporary urban life.

Indigenous Land Use and Early History

The land where Little Island now rises was originally part of the Hudson River estuary, historically inhabited by the Lenape people. The Lenape used the surrounding waterways and shoreline for fishing, hunting, and trading, integrating the island’s location into their seasonal movements and cultural rituals. Though the island itself is a new formation, the site’s Indigenous roots go back centuries, embedded in the traditions of the early Algonquian speakers of the region.

Landscape and Plant Biodiversity

Little Island features approximately 400 species of trees, shrubs, grasses, and perennials, with plantings tailored to the New York climate and river conditions. The park’s vegetation includes native and hardy species to withstand wind, salt spray, and pollution, creating a year-round evolving sensory experience. Seasonal plant displays shift through spring blooms, summer perennials, fall foliage, and winter evergreens.

Maritime and Industrial Legacy of Pier 54

Little Island sits atop the footprint of Pier 54, which was a major Cunard-White Star trans-Atlantic ocean liner terminal from 1910 to 1935. Notably, survivors of the Titanic disaster in 1912 were brought ashore at Pier 54 by the RMS Carpathia, adding significant historical and maritime importance to the site. The pier also served the RMS Lusitania, which famously was sunk in World War I just days after departing New York.

Vision, Design, and Costruction of Little Island

Conceived by Barry Diller and Diane von Fürstenberg, Little Island was envisioned as a new kind of urban park blending art, performance, and nature. Designed by Heatherwick Studio with landscape architects MNLA, the park opened in 2021. Its distinctive design is supported by 132 sculptural precast concrete “pots” that rise from the water like tulips on stems, elevating the landscape above the river and creating diverse microclimates.
