The Isle of Meadows, located at the mouth of the Fresh Kills estuary on Staten Island, was part of the traditional Lenape homeland. The area was once marshy meadowland, rich in natural resources, supporting native fishing, hunting, and seasonal activities. Its earliest documented mention is from 1768, when it was known as Deadman’s Island after an incident in which a ferryboat carrying a crew was stranded and some died of exposure. During the Revolutionary War, colonial forces used the island strategically, further embedding it in early American history.
