Duck Island itself, though only a few acres in size, is mapped within Pelham Bay Park’s extensive complex of tidal wetlands, salt marshes, and coastal forest. The island is home to native wetland vegetation and acts as a crucial stopover and nesting site for numerous bird species including herons, egrets, mallards, and wood ducks. The area supports over 350 species of birds, 750 plant types, and is critical for migratory waterfowl traveling the Atlantic Flyway. Ongoing biodiversity mapping and monitoring efforts target Pelham Bay's islands as reference sites for undisturbed urban ecology. These habitats provide water filtration, shoreline stabilization, and are home to rare animals such as diamondback terrapins, native orchids, and butterflies.
