Through the 18th and 19th centuries, the islands changed hands from prominent owners like Thomas Pell, Oliver Delancey, John Hunter, and, by the late 1800s, Henry DeWitt Carey. In 1939, after years of efforts by Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, the City of New York acquired the islands to use them as a base for Orchard Beach fireworks displays.
